Gallery destroyed in fire - George Herald>
Welcome to An African Canvas, if you're looking for Contemporary South African Art with a difference, an evocative glimpse of the lost tribes of Africa or superbly executed oil paintings featuring African subjects, then look no further...

An African Canvas provides a comprehensive look at contemporary oil paintings featuring bold abstracts, traditional African art forms, tribal and ethnic African art, the African bushveld and animals, skillfully created by Peter Pharoah, an accomplished artist with an intense passion for Africa.

Peter's subject, his textures and bold use of colour evoke a strong feeling of Africa and its dying tribal heritage. These contemporary works represent an exceptional tribute to the skills which are all but extinct in modern African society.

So why not take a journey into Africa with us....

PETER'S STYLE & TECHNIQUE

A painter's technique – the actual way in which he applies paint – can be as personal and distinctive as handwriting.

Peter's chosen medium, oils, are extremely flexible and allows him to create surface textures ranging from porcelain smoothness to wildly expressive impasto (a term for thickly applied paint), using brushes, knives, or even fingers.

This personal 'handwriting'; is a very distinctive part of Peter's style. His paintings are built up with a system of glazes.

A glaze is a transparent or semi-transparent layer of paint applied over another one in such a way that the lower one shows through to some extent. This can produce effects of great richness and depth of colour that cannot be achieved by simply mixing colours together.

To this rich and vibrant backdrop, opaque paint is lightly dragged or skimmed with the brush over a previous layer so that the lower layer is only partly covered and shows through irregularly. Taken together, these techniques allow him to create a vast range of colours and textural effects.

This unique and individualistic approach is a hallmark of Peter's work, together with the richness and diversity of his subject,  Africa, the land and its people provides a tapestry of contemporary art that both enthralls and inspires.'

Zimbabwe is a magical place...

When my wife announced that we were going to Zimbabwe for our next 'Safari'... I have to say that I was a little dubious about her choice of destination.

After all this was the land where death and disease lurked in every corner...

Peter's abstracts can now be viewed at The Gallery at the Hyatt Regency Oubaai Golf Resort.

If you are in the Oubaai (close to Heroldsbay) vicinity its worth paying a visit to Gallery@Oubaai for a wide selection of amazing South African art. An exhibition of paintings not to be forgotten...

Peter's imagination takes him places. Wilderness artist Peter Pharoah draws inspiration from many things; one of them is Island Lake where his studio is located.

With his camera at the ready, he has become attuned to capturing that perfect image which may become the inspiration for his next painting.

PETER Pharoah, who lives and works on the Garden Route, is exhibiting a new range of paintings at his gallery in Wilderness, under the title of An African Canvas. The paintings are something of a departure from his previous style, but are instantly recognisable by their bold use of colour and distinctive brush work.
